We are an informal participatory group who select our own topics, enjoy ideas in
history, and also a certain amount of socialising. If you are attracted to looking into
past events or people, or simply want to take a broader interest with others, the
history group could be the one for you. Meeting in members' houses in the West Hill
and Putney areas, we give members the opportunity to look into a historical topic or
person that interests them and talk to the group about what they have found,
followed by discussion. The focus varies from medieval history to relatively recent
events, and from Britain to world-wide. We are complementing this by looking at
‘history behind the headlines’ – that is the historical antecedents to events currently
in the headlines. Presentations in the last year have included ones on the Peterloo
Massacre, Italy after Mussolini and the life of Edgar Allen Poe.
We welcome new members when vacancies arise.
